You see a post from a small business, give it a nod, maybe even think “nice work”, and then ignore it like the fruit option at McDonald’s. It’s ok, we’ve all done it. But. Those little buttons – like, share, save, actually do more than you’d think.
This isn’t a guilt trip. It’s just a way to let you know how those simple taps help us little people stay afloat, get seen, and bring in new work.
Let’s break it down
1. Likes tell the algorithm, “Oi, this is worth showing.”
When someone likes a post, it’s like giving it a little nudge to the algorithm gods. “This is decent, show a few more people.” The more people see it, the more chance it has of getting in front of someone who needs that service, whether it’s a new roof or a virtual assistant.
2. Shares are the digital version of “I know someone who can help with that…”
Back in the day, you’d recommend someone over a pint. Now it’s a tap of the ‘share’ button. Job done, pint still in hand. It’s literally how businesses grow, one recommendation at a time.
3. Saves are gold dust.
That save button? It tells social media this post is worth keeping, which means it’s likely to get pushed out to even more people. It also means that you might come back later to book, buy or recommend. You’re helping future-you and helping the business tick over.
4. Comments? Even a “Looks great!” helps.
Engagement (yes, I’m using that word even though I hate it) tells the app that a post is doing well. A few comments can turn a post from “seen by 11 people” to “reached 2,000 and got a booking.” No exaggeration.
5. You’re helping someone keep their business going.
Clicking that like button might seem throwaway, but for someone trying to get their next booking or fill a few spare slots, it could be the difference between an empty Tuesday or a full one. And when small businesses do well, we all do. It’s the ripple effect.
So, next time you see something from someone self-employed, a local tradesperson, or a small business, tap the heart, leave a like, comment, or save it for later. It doesn’t cost a thing, but it helps loads.
And if you’re running your own business and don’t want to spend your evenings wrestling your inbox or swearing at your spreadsheet.… I can help with that too.
